Overseas Program in Malaysia and Singapore
- Aug. 16 to 21, 2016
- Participants: 17 students of 2nd grade students and 3 teachers
- Day 1 – Arrived Singapore
- Day 2 – Exchange program with local high school and college
In the morning, two groups visited two local schools seprately: 9 students visited Dunman High School and 8 students visited National Junior College. At Dunman High School, they introduced about Tsuchiura First High School in front of all students (approximately 2,000 students). After the whole school meeting, they had a discussion on Japanese culture with Japanese Culture Club members at Dunman High School and had a lunch together. Throughout these experiences, Tsuchiura First High School students were able to learn the difference between Japan and Malaysia, and also they were able to develop an objective perspective to look at their own culture. At National Junior College, 8 students had a cultural discussion with the leaders of each athletic and cultural clubs. Mainly, they discussed on leadership such as how to teach and lead club members at high school for achievement.
After lunch, all students moved to Kuala-Lumpur.
- Day 3 – Lecture and workshop at MJIIT campus
The first day in Kuala-Lumpur,
they visited Malaysia-Japan International institute of Technology (MJIIT)
within the Universiti Teknologi Malysia campus. Prof. Sugiura, Prof. Ishizaki
and Prof. Hara gave a lecture about the utilization of algae for energy
depletion and its solution. Students learned about global human resources
in academic field and the key facts of Malaysian industry. Besides, students
asked questions to MJIIT students how to make a public interview in the
city successful next day.
In the afternoon, students made a group (2 to
3 students per group with 1 MJIIT college student) and did a public interview
at the place that each group chose to make the interview productive. This
activity helped them better understand the difference between Japan and
foreign countries and deepen own research. Discussion with MJIIT college
students also promoted better understanding of cultural diversity and communication
skill as well.
- Day 4 - Presentation at MJIIT campus
Students prepared a presentation with
the support by MJIIT college students. It was a good opportunity to have
an English presentation, and their speaking skill in front of audience
was much improved.
College students guided the students to a mosque. For
most of the students, it was the first time to visit and learn the religion
and culture of Islam.
They had a dinner together with local students and
introduced high school life in Japan and school song.
- Day 5 - Business tour and cultural visit
BuzzElement
8 students visited a start-up company BuzzElement managed by Japanese, Mr. Hajime Hirose. In the discussion with Mr. Hirose and staff of company, students asked the motivation to launch a global business in Malaysia and the significance of hiring local staff. Mr. Hirose taught the students the knowledge and skills to manage business in overseas.
SUSHI King
SUSHI KING is one of the overseas affiliated company under TRB conglomerate managed by Japanese. Mr. Tago, the General Manger of SUSHI KING, gave a lecture on the business strategy to develop local culture in the global market.
Taman Warisan Pertanian
8 students participated a farm tour in Taman Warisan Pertanian (Agriculture Heritage Park) in Putrajaya city. In the tour, English speaking guide explained Malaysian native plants such as rubber trees, cocoa, palm oil, tropical fruits, herbs and spices. Also they experienced the process of palm oil extraction at the plantation.
National Museum of Malaysia
Japanese speaking guide gave a tour and explained the history, culture, and traditional life-style of Malaysia.
Petronas Twin Towers
As the last stop of this overseas program, they visited Petronas Twin Towers and went up to the observation platform on the 86th floor. This twin towers were funded by Petronas, the Malaysia oil company, and one of the towers was constructed by Hazama Ando Corporation. The view from 86th floor symbolized the economic development of Malaysia with high buildings still being built one after another. They spent time to look back the days in Singapore and Malaysia on this last day.
